Showcase annual competition. Among my col-
leagues were four artists from three countries:
Chen Jian (China), Jean Noble (Great Britain),
TieYang(China),JosephZbukvic(Australia),
and, an art historian, Shang Hui (China).
Our talks (thanks to the steadfast ef orts of
our talented translators, Wu Dan, Qiao Yuping and Zhong Tieyun) were
spirited, revealing dif erences in the ways we interpreted imagery—nuances
that would have been lost to us had we not been kneeling on the l oor as we
stared at pictures and spoke to and around one another, often gesturing with
both hands. What a transformative, utterly joyful experience!
In upcoming issues, we’ll highlight some of the wonderful works we saw
and talked about. Learn more about the show at shenzhenbiennial.com.

Letters from Prison
I’m on pins and needles as I wait
each month for h e Artist’s Magazine.
When I received the July/August
2015 issue and one of your fea-
tured artists was Michael Klein, I
was elated; the article on Burton
Silverman (June) was so insightful;
and October brought Cesar Santos!
Due to my circumstances I have
limited access to art supplies (for
that reason I’m also sending a ques-
tion to Ask the Experts). For over 20
