and sea, Paul Lewin

has emerged as

one of the leading

contemporary landscape

painters in the South West.

“I’m drawn to the drama of

the coast – the meeting of the

land and the sea – it's always

changing and moving. It’s a

spectacle, one that I never grow

bored of,“ Paul enthuses.

“The landscape is so varied,

from the high cliffs to the

beaches to the estuaries. I’m

attracted to the reflected light

that comes back on to the land

from the sea, bouncing across

the water. It’s a timeless subject

that’s forever changing so there's

always a different mood each

day you go out. All around you

is erosion, making you aware of

the passing of time. It’s vast, it’s

powerful and puts everything

into perspective.“

Born in Manchester, Paul

took his foundation art course

at Stockport, and then studied

Fine Art in Bristol. In his second

year, a field trip to Cornwall had

him hooked on the environment,

so after graduating he moved to

the coast for a few months. That

was 25 years ago.

“For some people, Cornwall

chews them up and spits them

out! Winter here is quite harsh

• it’s very remote and there’s an
  edginess to it. For me, it helped
  me focus on the landscape and
  my relationship to it. Within the
  first year of living in Cornwall
  I was exhibiting and selling my
  art. It kind of unfolded for me
  and felt like it was the right thing
  to do and that I could make a
  living out of it. Now I could never
  move away from the sea as it’s
  such a big part of my life.“
