St Ives Bay: a step-by-step guide
Experiment a little and enjoy building up layers, creating texture and adding detail.
Mixed media painting
Roughly sketch the
composition in
watercolour pencilWith the composition in place, I add interest by gluing
collage pieces and texture using resin sand applied with
a palette knife on the houses and parts of the bay.
I apply coloured paper to create the boats and, using the
edge of a credit card dipped in black gesso, add detail to
other elements. I loosely paint the hill in the background.
I tone down the pinkish colour in the foreground and
introduce shadows beneath the boats and on the quays.
Further finishing details are added at this stage.I block in the sky and beach by spraying the canvas with
water and applying paint with a scrunched-up damp paper
to wel. Then I block in other elements and tone down the sky.1324
