St Ives Bay: a step-by-step guide
Experiment a little and enjoy building up layers, creating texture and adding detail.
Mixed media painting
Roughly sketch the
composition in
watercolour pencil
With the composition in place, I add interest by gluing
collage pieces and texture using resin sand applied with
a palette knife on the houses and parts of the bay.
I apply coloured paper to create the boats and, using the
edge of a credit card dipped in black gesso, add detail to
other elements. I loosely paint the hill in the background.
I tone down the pinkish colour in the foreground and
introduce shadows beneath the boats and on the quays.
Further finishing details are added at this stage.
I block in the sky and beach by spraying the canvas with
water and applying paint with a scrunched-up damp paper
to wel. Then I block in other elements and tone down the sky.
