Using my finger to draw helped
me to loosen up, making me less
precious about mark-making.

he iPad is a welcome
addition to the
toolbox, offering
a versatile array of
drawing options. This instrument
is not a replacement for pencil,
brushes and paper, but is an
alternative choice and, for some,
an easier and quicker way to
work outdoors.
The iPad toolbox menu offers
familiar names such as pencils
and brushes, but it must be
remembered that the iPad, or
any other digital application for
that matter, is not a conventional
drawing tool. Using my finger
to draw helped me to loosen
up, making me less precious
about my mark-making. There is
something primal about drawing
with one’s finger, but if you
prefer, a stylus offers a familiar
implement to hold. Be patient
with this new tool. My first
sketches were very simple, but as
I gained confidence, I developed
more painterly styles.
It was exhilarating taking
a direct approach to making
these quick sketches from life
on the street by grabbing first
impressions, the eye and the
finger working together to catch
the feeling of a location. The
