In researching earlier
precedents for my own
art practice, which
encompasses photography,
performance and music,
I have been frustrated by a shortage
of information about women artists
making interdisciplinary work in
the early 20th century. In order to
challenge that historical bias, I have
spent the last 17 years gathering texts,
photographs and objects related
to the work of Natalie Brettschneider.
The archive provokes questions about
the subjective nature of historical
narratives. Recently discovered
documents reveal fascinating links
between Brettschneider and several
other Canadian musicians and artists
who were active in Paris between
the wars, including Ottawa-based
harpsichordist Frances Duncan
Barwick, whose generous bequest
made the founding of Carleton
University Art Gallery possible.
Carol Sawyer is a Vancouver-based artist. Her exhibition
“The Natalie Brettschneider Archive,” curated by
Heather Anderson, is on view to Apr. 19 at Carleton
