The smell of success

Michael Donovan, an

oft-quoted fragrance

aficionado who has

now launched his own

perfume line, St Giles.

All five of its initial

offerings have been

created around how

a fragrance makes

you feel. The Tycoon

is an extravagant

but elegant bit of

olfactive oomph.

“For me, the smell of

privilege and opulence

is always a chypre,”

says Donovan. So,

working with master

perfumer Bertrand

Duchaufour, he’s

divined a unisex

blend of heady

patchouli, pomelo

and grapefruit, with

a warm centre of

spicy/wood

cypriol. The result

is dignified, rather

than brash,

and assuredly
