This mid-layer garment, available in
either a jacket or gilet, has a durable
soft-shell outer combined with
lightweight thermal insulation. The outer
fabric has two layers, with a durable face
bonded to a fl eece back. The combination
makes for a highly breathable water- and
wind-resistant layer, with a shape
articulated for ease of movement.

much of the coastline around the UK has little or
no 3G/4G mobile data signal.

This low-cost receiver is
designed to be used in
conjunction with a
smartphone or tablet. The
unit stores weather and
maritime safety messages
that can then be viewed onthe phone/tablet screen. It has low power
requirements and can be run continuously, with
the stored messages downloaded as and when
required by the user. The internal memory has
space for more than 400 messages, with the latest
broadcasts overwriting the oldest.
An Android app allows users to search through
all the stored messages or program the device to
display only specifi c message types from selected
stations. An app from a third-party supplier is in
development for Apple devices. The package
includes a standard or high-performance antenna
with a 7m-long cable, plus cabling for a 12V power

Waterproof USB charger
The type of USB charger you insert into a 12V cigar
lighter-type socket often doesn’t work reliably long-term
in a marine environment, but there’s also a growing
need to charge gadgets, ranging from phones to tablets
