Overprint with paint
- Cut a 3" square of craft foam to use as
a print block to apply the transparent
fabric paint. - Pour transparent fabric paints into
small plastic containers. Add water
at a 1:1 ratio. Stir to create a uniform
consistency. - With a foam brush, apply the paint to
the square of craft foam. Press it onto the
printed fabric to release the paint.
TIP: To create color mixes on your design,
overprint with additional colors.
Heat set and clean up
Let the fabric paint dry completely before
heat setting.
- To set with an iron, sandwich the
painted fabric between 2 pressing
cloths. Following the manufacturer’s
instruction, press the “sandwich” on 1
side for half the required setting time;
fl ip it over and press from the other side
for the remaining time. - To set with a clothes dryer, place the
fabric in a pillowcase or cloth laundry
bag. Close the bag (with a rubber band
or drawstring) and dry on high for
50–60 minutes. - After printing, press the glue print block
into damp paper towels to remove most
of the paint. Wash or wipe the craft foam
block with mild soap and water.
“Hearts & Kisses” fabric
- Measure and mark an 8" square of cardboard in a 4 × 4 grid, creating 16
squares. Alternate hot glue designs within the marked areas. - With the brayer, roll black opaque fabric paint onto the block and make
a print on fabric. - Overprint part of the pattern with craft foam blocks painted with
transparent fabric paint. I used 2 blocks for this design—a 2" foam
square and a foam square with an adhesive foam heart centered on it.
