Howwe test
T
he latest trend in gaming mice is to go as light as possible,
with manufacturers even perforating the outer surfaces of
their mice to shed weight. To test this development, we’ve
grabbed half a dozen of these mice, to see how they compare.
Nearly all these new ultra-light mice weigh well under 80g, but as
there’s so few of them that are quite this featherweight, we’ve also
included a handful of models that push the scales a little higher (up to
82g). As a point of comparison, even limiting the group test to sub-
90g mice would eliminate all but one mouse from the line-ups of
Corsair and SteelSeries, for instance, while many companies don’t
make any mice lighter than 85g.
To test the mice, we concentrated on intensive FPS gaming, which is
their target market. These mice are all about being small, light, simple
and highly manoeuvrable. We tested their tracking in gaming, while
also taking comfort, build quality, design, features and software
support into account.
We also, of course, accounted for their weight, and whether they
include a new style of very light and flexible cable. A more flexible cable is
less likely to push back against your movements and disturb your aim.
This test also highlighted the importance of relatively subtle differences in
mouse shape. All these mice have very similar, ambidextrous-style
shapes, but a few millimetres here or there makes all the difference.
