Knowing the

IGFA rules

RULE BOOK

Q:

I’ve been seeing these extended hooks on the
market for a few years now. They are used with
skirted lures. The hook shank is cut and a wire cable is
then swaged between the two halves. I believe this rig is
allowed as long as part of the hook shank below the cut
remains inside the skirt of the lure. Please confirm the
IGFA’s views on this?

A:

This question comes up frequently in offshore lure-
trolling. The IGFA rules state that at least part of the
hook must be enclosed within the skirted material in order for
the rig to be legal. That said, in such a situation where the hook
shank has been purposefully extended, the IGFA applies the
interpretation of the rule to the point where the shank was cut

(closest to the bend of the hook). Since anglers are inventive
and always pushing the rules, it is certainly possible that this
‘cut point’ would be made further up the shank – therefore
increasing the portion of hook that could extend beyond the
skirt. Therefore, the IGFA would view and evaluate such rigs
on a case-by-case basis.

Based on this photo provided, the IGFA would consider this rig
IGFA-legal as long as part of the black shrink-wrap closest to the
bend of the hook is enclosed within the skirt material.
