SUPERSAIL WORLD 52 APRIL-JUNE 2018
RANGER – J5
41m
Design: Starling Burgess/Olin Stephens
Build: Danish Yacht 2003
The crew of Ranger are racing in Palma as a tribute
to John Williams, her owner who died earlier this year.
The build of the distinctive snub-nosed ‘Super J’ was a
key part of the revival of the modern J Class fleet.
Although relatively heavy, she is fast in flat water and
has a highly experienced crew, including longtime
helmsman Erle Williams, to take her into battle against
Svea and Velsheda
SCORPIONE OF LONDON
46m
Design: Judel/Vrolijk
Build: Baltic Yachts 2006
Scorpione of London is the former Baltic 152 Pink
Gin, a design with a reverse transom and deck saloon
and a different aesthetic to Baltic’s latest generation
of composite performance cruisers. In her previous
incarnation she competed in the Superyacht Cup in 2007,
coinciding with the America’s Cup in Valencia. She has a
new owner (who has raced with the owner of WinWin) and
a crew trying out the white sails Corinthian class
SAUDADE
45m
Design: Tr i p p D e s i g n
Build: Wally Yachts 2008
Another of the Superyacht Cup regulars, this carbon
build took shape for an Admiral’s Cup maestro turned
high-speed cruising fanatic who wanted something a bit
different. She is still a head-turner and very keenly raced.
She will be here straight from the superyacht regatta in
Sardinia, an event she has won three times on the trot.
But she has never won in Palma and to do so has to pitch
up against Highland Fling, Inoüi, Missy and WinWin
SILENCIO
50m
Design & build: Perini Navi 2001
This big Perini has had two changes of owner since 2013
(when she was known as Perseus), most recently changing
hands at the end of last year. Although this is the first time her
new owner has raced her, Silencio is a veteran of race courses
on both side of the Atlantic and has put in some good results
in previous years. This time she will be pitted against the
fellow Perini Aquarius, among others
