LIGHTEN UP
When it comes to preventing marine
growth on hull bottoms, it seems
innovation has no boundary. Poison-free
options investigated in recent years
include everything from shark skin-like
finishes to ultrasound technology. The
latest promising weapon in preventing
bacteria and barnacles from slowing down
ships and yachts is a new look at UV light,
used efectively in aquariums and
water-filtration systems. A 2016 pilot
study by the Australian Department
of Defense showed promising
results in this area.
Now AkzoNobel and Royal Philips are
committed to developing a new coating
integrating thin, flexible ultraviolet
light-emitting diodes able to extend time
between haul-outs. akzonobel.com
OYSTER CATCHER One of the biggest
sailing yacht brands, UK-based
Oyster Marine, has been rescued
from bankruptcy a few months after
shutting its doors despite having its
biggest order book in years. British
tech entrepreneur Richard Hadida
plans to develop an entry-level
series with Humphreys Yacht Design.
You can’t judge a book by its cover,
nor the Kube by its demure looks.
This 48lb waterproof speaker by
Austin-based Thomas & Darden hides
a mini fridge within and can project
sound up to 500ft away. The interior
compartment holds up to 16 bottles of
wine, presumably undisturbed by a
maximum level of 122db. It also does
extra duty as a charging station and
lasts up to 50 hours before needing
a charge.$1,999, kubesound.com
