Glenn Spiro’s newest

collection, Materials of

the Old World, debuted

to great acclaim at

TEFAF, the annual

European Fine Art Fair.

Classic gemstones are

mixed with ancient

stones and artifacts.

The inspiration came

years ago, when Spiro

made earrings from two

medallions dating from

the first millennium BC.

“The history and

provenance of the

medallions ignited a real

passion in me,” he says,

“so we started collecting

ancient ceramics, agate

and carnelian, without

really knowing how we

were going to set them.”

He adds that it has been

“a slow but magical

process, as each

material has its

own individual form

and character.”
