A stylish steamer trunk
was once the only way to
transport your belongings,
and high quality versions
are fast gaining popularity
as a collector’s item. “Prices
have risen significantly with
Far East demand and private
collectors competing for the
best pieces,” says Tim Bent of
Bentleys in Chelsea, London,
which specialises in vintage
luggage. Currently for sale for
£24,000 is a rare Louis Vuitton
orange shoe trunk, circa 1920,
which features a number of
Cunard shipping labels. It
belonged to a British peer who
served as a member of the
British delegation at the UN in
the 1950s.
Since former collector
and now CEO Jean-Michel
Signoles breathed life back
into Goyard, the value of
vintage pieces by the French
luggage brand also continues
to increase. One of its steamer
trunks from around 1909, with
leather bindings, brass fitting
and the brand’s signature
canvas covering, comes with a
£25,000 price tag. goyard.com
