grateful and said to me, ‘Tanks very much Mr Reid, this is
the frst time I’ve ever been on a keelboat.’”
Two years later, with another child on the way and
a house to build, Reid sold Waterwitch to build a house
on 16 acres at Whitford. What with children, a house,
a lifestyle property and a business, he didn’t do much
sailing over the next few years. But he did manage to be
aboard Concord for the 1969 One Ton Cup trials.
He also took up horse riding in a big way, eventually
getting into jumping, eventing and hunting, but as this is
a boating magazine we’ll stick to the boats.
In 1977 he bought another yacht; the S&S-designed K
Class keeler Sapphire, built for Russ Hooper by Percy Voss
in 1958. Olin Stevens designed Sapphire not long after
tank testing 12m yachts for the 1958 America’s Cup. It
wasn’t surprising that Sapphire proved to be one of the
quickest K Class boats.
Around 1995, Reid bought an old Etchell and quickly
grew to love the class. At the time there were only a
handful in the country, so to help raise the profle, in
1996 he and daughter Emma organized and ran the
Qantas Etchell Regatta. Te entrants were sailing legends
Colin Beashel, Dennis Conner, Russell Coutts, Rod Davis,
Leslie Egnot, Buddy Melges and Bruce Nelson.
Reid managed to get several major sponsors onboard
and the regatta was huge success. Te Etchell Class took
of and eventually grew to over 60 boats with the 2003
Etchell Worlds being held here.
Having become friendly with Conner, Reid then helped
him obtain sponsorship for his 2000 America’s Cup
