Antifouling

Antifoul is ineffective if applied
to a hull that’s poorly prepared,
so put in the time to get it right!

Preparing the hull for the season can be
an easy job on one boat and a lot of work
on the next, depending on the surface
condition. One antifoul does not fit all
and it’s worth carefully considering your
options. Generally, applying two coats
is standard. Coppercoat and similar products
apply well to a new hull that’s very smooth
and in great condition, whereas more
traditional products are more likely to
suit an older hull with more imperfections.
Before applying anything, use the
opportunity to check over the condition
of the gelcoat, paying particular attention
to the rudder. Damage and nicks should
be repaired and filled, never painted
over. Preparation is everything, so get
the surface right and you will achieve
much easier application and a better result. Joe McCarthy
