PILOTAGE
Approaching from the east, there
are few dangers as long as you keep
the land to starboard and give it a
sensible offing. Once you can see St
Anthony’s Lighthouse (ISO white/red
15s, Horn 30s) and have identified the
large black conical beacon of Black
Rock in the harbour’s mouth, you’re
safe to either follow the buoyage at
night or head for the outer arms of
the docks during the day. If entering
at night for the first time, the light from
the Governor can be lost in the lights
from the docks behind it, so to be
safe, one can always head up
towards West Narrows.
If coming from the south, pass to
the east of the Manacles Buoy (East
Cardinal). At night, you’ll be in the
red sector of St Anthony’s Light so
only come north when it shows white.
During the day as you approach, you’ll
be able to see Falmouth’s beachfront,
with large lightly painted buildings. To
starboard will be a green hump with
a conspicuous building on top; this
is Pendennis Castle and the mouth
of the river will be clearly visible to
the east. The only hazard is the unlit
isolated danger of Black Rock. The
large black concrete mark sits on
the southern end of the rock which
extends around
100m north.

DAY SAILS
One of the best day sails is down to
the Helford River and back. It’s 3.5
miles from Black Rock to the mouth
of the Helford, which is sheltered in
all but an easterly. You can pick up
a buoy and head north to the Ferry
Boat Inn or south to the quieter
Shipwrights Arms. On a rising
spring tide you, can explore up to
Gweek or just take the dinghy up to
Frenchman’s Creek. Alternatively,
you could anchor off Durgan Beach
or Polgwidden Cove and visit
Glendurgan or Trebah Gardens.
Around the Roseland Peninsula,
is Porthscatho where you could
anchor off the town’s small beach,
or head further north in the bay to
Porthcurnick Beach. For walkers,
it’s a five-mile walk from St Mawes
via the foot ferry to Place Creek.
