Furling sails is not enough. If a major storm is forecast to hit your area, you must remove all sails and either stow them in the
saloon or ashore (left). Be sure to strip the decks as much as possible (right), and immobilize — or even remove — the boom.

Before a storm heads your way, purchase new dock or mooring lines. Salt, stretch and sun take their toll on lines, and old
ones can fail (left). Secure the chafe gear to a cleat, stanchion, chocks or dock to ensure that it stays in position (right).
