Dock construction at Jenkins
Marine
Working on new section of dock at Sooke-based
Jenkins Marine, for delivery to a customer in East
Sooke, are carpenter/diver Jeff Ewart (left) and weld-
er/dock builder Stacy Pshyk. “It’s been a busy year for
docks, with the windstorms we had over the winter,”
noted Ewart.
Jenkins Marine owner
John Jenkins (right) has
been in the boatbuilding,
repair and refit business
for 55 years now, and has
been running the Sooke-
based yard since October
- He purchased the
yard, which had previ-
ously operated as Sooke
Marine Enterprises, from
Maywell Wickham, who’d
established the facility
in the mid-1960s. Prior
to the purchase, Jenkins
operated out of Esquimalt
Graving Dock in Victoria,
but due to changing
haulout rates and avail-
ability at Esquimalt it made better sense as a smaller operator to acquire his own haulout facilities. After moving into the Sooke
site Jenkins undertook a massive cleanup and installed several hundred feet of moorage floats and a new cradle capable of
hauling vessels up to 90 tons and about 55 feet. The yard now has two marine ways – the large outside ways, and a slightly
smaller ways in the main shed, allowing vessels to be hauled inside for extended projects. On the smaller ways for a quick
shave and haircut when Western Mariner visited was a classic little wood-hulled sailing sloop (photo above, right).
