Onboard the new-to-them
fibreglass-hulled shrimp trawler
mattaiS (ex Seacott, 1979, Mooney
Enterprises, Richmond) are (l to r)
deckhand Dave Hicks, relief skip-
per Scott Hill, and skipper/owner
Andy Hill. The Hill brothers have
been fishing together for years –
they previously leased a shrimp
boat called adrianna, and before
that they had a north coast salmon
troller called zodiac (1951, Withey’s
Shipyard). Other prior vessels
include the outbound (ex aili A,
1949, B. Gestrin and A. Koskela)
and the cape keppel, built in Sidney
in 1981 by their father Lawrence
Hill. They grew up on the weSterly
wind, which their father built
in Sicamous in 1974. Andy Hill
bought the mattiaS out of Steveston in May 2018. Powered by a 165-hp Mitsubishi, the vessel is named for the previous owner’s
nephew, but was originally built as a gillnetter called Seacott, and was operated for a time by Sidney’s Jack Finlayson. “So it’s a
bit of a homecoming for the boat,” notes Andy Hill. When Western Mariner dropped by the crew was “cleaning up some haywire”
prior to heading out for shrimp.
