The PowerToys app can be run onstartup oryou can

launch it from theStart menu. Click the icon in the

notification area^1 to open thePowerToys window. You

can chooseto have either or both of thePowerToys running,^2

and decide whetheryou want itto launch withWindows.^3

Of the two newPowerToys, Shortcut Guide is the

simplest. All it does is open an on-screen guideto

Windows shortcuts. Just press and hold theWindows key

to shrinkyour current desktop to a thumbnail^1 and display

theavailablekeyboard shortcuts.^2

To launchFancyZones, click theFancyZones settings,

then the ‘Editzones’ button. It displays a selection of

layoutsfor organising the windows on your desktop.^1

Choose the number of panelsyou require^2 and pick a layout.

Useyour mouseto pick up a programby its title bar, then
hold down the Shiftkeyand move it around the screen.
The panels thatyou set up appear in the background.^1
Drop the window into one of the panels and and it will be
resized automaticallyto fit the space.

Back in ‘Chooseyour layout’,you can decide whetherto
have a border betweenyour windows^1 and how many
pixels the gap should be.^2 To configureyour own layout,
click ‘Edit selected layout’.^3 When you’ve finished, the new
layout will appear under the Custom tab.^4

Drag the circles^1 around the screento resize the
sections. Hoveringover anexisting area brings up a new
dividing line.^2 Position it whereyou like, then clickto
split the section along the line.When you’ve finished, giveyour
new layout a name and click ‘Save and apply’.^3

tools, which first appeared withWindows 95, were
developedby Microsoft so that advanced userscould
tweak and customise the operatingsystem.Well, now they’ve
made awelcome and long-overdue
return.We’ve only got two sofar,
available as a preview on GitHub (bit.ly/
dlpt485), but there are more on theway.
