Disney movies in annual Top 10 earners
Five of 2016’s top 10 highest-grossing films
were produced by Disney – if we include their
Lucasfilm, Pixar and Marvel Entertainment
subsidiaries and their distribution deal with Marvel
Entertainment. Captain America: Civil War, Rogue
One: A Star Wars Story, Finding Dory, Zootopia
and The Jungle Book were all effectively Disney
releases and held all five top positions (see right).

Golden Globe awards won by a film
Musical comedy drama La La Land (USA, 2016)
was nominated for seven Golden Globe awards
and won in every category. It took the gongs for:

Digital film extras in one scene
The Egyptian procession sequence in X-Men:
Apocalypse (USA, 2016) features 295,000
people, but only 25 human actors were actually
present when the scene was shot. The rest were
created using digital visual effects (VFX).

Jaws (see below) is regarded as the first summer blockbuster. It was the first film
to exceed $200 million in domestic (US and Canadian) box-office receipts.

MOST PROLIFIC COMPUTER-GENERATED ANIMATION FRANCHISE
The Jul 2016 release of Ice Age: Collision Course (USA) makes the franchise the largest
computer-generated animation series, and the first to reach five instalments. The movies
follow the adventures of a group of animals during prehistoric times. Created by Blue
Sky Studios, the series began with Ice Age (USA) in 2002. This and its three successors
became the highest-grossing animated feature films released in their respective years.
To date, the most successful of all the movies in the franchise is Ice Age: Dawn of the
Dinosaurs (USA, 2009), which had taken $859,701,857 (£683,388,000) at the box office
worldwide as of 11 Dec 2016, according to The Numbers.

Fastest editing in a feature film
With 3,007 individual shots crammed into 79 min
59 sec, the action movie Derailed (USA, 2002),
starring Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme,
is the fastest-edited feature film in history, with
an Average Shot Length (ASL) of 1.53 sec.
The slowest editing in a feature film is that
for Aleksandr Sokurov’s film Russian Ark (RUS,
2002), which consists of a single, continuous
tracking shot lasting 91 min 26.3 sec. This
gives the film an ASL of 5,486.3 sec – by far the
highest recorded for a narrative feature film.

Most expensive Bollywood film
The science-fiction blockbuster 2.0 (IND, 2017),
also known as Robot 2, is reported to have cost
3 bn Indian rupees ($44.1 m; £36 m) to produce.
It stars Akshay Kumar (CAN, b. IND).

Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie disaster movie Train to
Busan (KOR) broke national box-office records
in its home country following its release
in Jul 2016. It went on to earn $99,063,777
(£79,566,100) internationally as of 16 Feb 2017,
according to The Numbers, making it the most
successful South Korean film ever.

Film without a villain
The 22nd highest-grossing film of all time as
of Jan 2017, Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory (USA,
2016) is the most successful film to date to
feature a plot line with no clearly defined major
antagonist, and the first movie in this category
to gross more than $1 bn (£820 m) worldwide.
As of 29 Dec 2016, it had grossed $1,022,617,376
(£834,490,000) according to The Numbers.

Studio
In a press release on 19 Dec 2016, Walt Disney
Studios confirmed that it had just become
the first studio to gross $7 bn (£5.6 bn) in a
year at the global box office. Disney’s final
worldwide gross for 2016 was $7.605 bn
(£6.18 bn), comprising $2.9 bn (£2.36 bn)
from the USA and Canada and $4.7 bn
(£3.82 bn) from international markets.

financial information, with figures on more than
25,000 movies and 125,000 people involved in the film
industry. It was founded in 1997 by Bruce Nash, and is now
visited by more than 5 million people every year. As well
as movie fans, the major studios, independent production
companies and investors use the site and its services to
decide which movies to make and when to release them.
The site gathers data from the movie studios, retailers,
news reports and other sources to compile its database,
known as OpusData. The database contains in excess of
