LARGEST GATHERING OF CENTENARIANS
On 4 Nov 2016, a group of 45 individuals aged
100 or more assembled at Parliament House
in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in an event
organized by Queensland Community Care
Network (AUS). They were attending an early
Christmas luncheon hosted by the Honourable
Annastacia Palaszczuk – Queensland’s state
premier and patron of the care home’s 100+ Club.

Robert Marchand (FRA, b. 26 Nov 1911) is the oldest competitive cyclist.
On 4 Jan 2017, aged 105 years 39 days, he rode 22.547 km (14.01 mi) in the
Best Hour Performance in the Men’s “Master aged 105 years and above”
category at the Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France.
The oldest competitive canoeist is Avis Noott (UK, b. 24 Jun 1938). On
6 Mar 2016, aged 77 years 256 days old, she rowed in a race in Dulverton, UK.
The aggregate age of the oldest married couple to run a marathon is
163 years 360 days, by Masatsugu Uchida, aged 83 years 272 days, and his
wife Ryoko Uchida (both JPN), aged 80 years 88 days. They ran in the Shimada
Oigawa Marathon in Shimada, Shizuoka, Japan, on 30 Oct 2016.
According to the World Health Organization, the population of people aged
80 or over will be 395 million by 2050, some four times the level in 2000.

Sarah Knauss (USA, 1880–1999) and her 96-year-
old daughter Kathryn “Kitty” Knauss Sullivan
(USA, 1903–2005) had a combined age of
215 years 140 days when Sarah passed away.
She was 119 years 97 days old at the time, while
Kathryn was aged 96 years 43 days.

At the age of 41 years 56 days, Oksana Chusovitina
(UZB) competed at the 2016 Olympic Games, in
Rio de 9aneiro, Brazil, on 14 Aug. She finished
seventh in the women’s vault final.

Kazuyoshi Miura (JPN, b. 26 Feb 1967) netted
aged 50 years 14 days playing for Yokohama FC
at Nippatsu Mitsuzawa Stadium in Yokohama,
Japan, on 12 Mar 2017.

Aged 69 years 85 days old, tennis player
Gail Falkenberg (USA, b. 16 Jan 1947) defeated an
opponent 47 years her junior. On 10 Apr 2016, she
beat 22-year-old Rosalyn Small (USA, b. 22 Jun
1ưư3) 6–0, 6–1 on clay in the first Ùualifying
round of an International Tennis Federation (ITF)

Astronaut
John Glenn Jr (USA, 18 Jul 1921–8 Dec 2016) was
77 years 103 days old when he was launched into
space as part of the crew of Discovery STS-95 on
29 Oct 1998. The mission lasted nine days, and
Glenn landed back on Earth on 7 Nov 1998.
Peggy Whitson (USA, b. 9 Feb 1960) became
the oldest female astronaut aged 56 years
282 days. The NASA astronaut was on board
a Soyuz CS-03 spacecraft that set oą for
the International Space Station (ISS) from
the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at
2:20 a.m. local time on 18 Nov 2016 and went
into orbit 8 min later.

John Gannon (IRL, b. 27 May 1918) has been
a registered member of the St James’s Brass
and Reed Band (est. 1800) since 22 Mar 1936.
As of 22 Mar 2017, he had enjoyed 81 years of
continuous active service with the band. John
became a life member of the band in 1961, after
25 years’ service, at which
time he became exempt
from paying subs.
