Julie Mills (UK) was at the
point of death owing to
severe heart failure and
viral myocarditis when,
on 14 Aug 1998, cardiac
surgeons at the John
Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford,
UK, used a non-pulsatile
blood pump (AB180) to
support her for one week.
For three days during that
period, Julie had no pulse.

The mesentery, which
connects the stomach to
the intestines and holds the
lower digestive system in
place, is the latest structure
in the human body to be classified as an organ, bringing the
total number to 79. Research by Irish surgeon Prof J Calvin
Coffey, FRCSI (above), and D Peter O’Leary, PhD, published
in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology in Nov 2016,
confirmed the mesentery as a discrete piece of tissue that
has its own functions, although further research is required
to identify the precise role that the organ plays.

John McCafferty (UK,
b. 28 Jul 1942) underwent
an orthotopic cardiac
transplant during the
night of 20–21 Oct 1982
at Harefield Hospital,
Middlesex, UK. He was
told at the time that he
could expect to live for a
further five years or so.
In fact, he survived for a
further 33 years 111 days,
eventually passing away on
9 Feb 2016. John is shown

On 6 Sep 2016, a total of 6,697 people
registered as organ donors in
Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, India. The
event was organized by the Indian
Medical Association Dindigul
district, Rotary International
District 3000 and PSNA College
of Engineering and Technology
(all IND) to highlight the
importance of organ donation
and how it can impact on lives.
MOST HEADS SHAVED SIMULTANEOUSLY
On 12 Mar 2016, the Canadian Cancer Society and the
Calgary Fire Department combined forces to shave the
heads of 329 people at the same time at the Fire Training
Academy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The attempt
took place at an event to raise money to fight cancer
and increase awareness about workplace carcinogens.
More than $140,000 (£97,829) was donated.
