Jeremiah 21-36: A Translation 13

(^5) Return, would you, each person from his evil way and from your evil doings,
and dwell on the soil that Yahweh gave to you and to your fathers for all time.
(^6) Do not go after other gods to serve them and to worship them, and do not
provoke me to anger with the work of your hands, and I will do you no hurt.
(^7) But you have not listened to me-oracle of Yahweh-so as to provoke me
to anger with the work of your hands, to your own hurt.
(^8) Therefore thus said Yahweh of hosts: 'Because you have not listened to my
words':
(^9) Look I am sending and I will take all the tribes of the north-oracle of
Yahweh-also to Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, my servant, and I will
bring them against this land and against its inhabitants and against all these
nations round about, and I will devote them to destruction, and I will make
them a desolation, an object of hissing, and ruins forever.^10 And I will ban-
ish from them the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the
groom and the voice of the bride, the sound of millstones and the light of
the lamp.^11 And all this land will become a ruin and a desolation, and these
nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
(^12) And it will happen when seventy years are fulfilled, I will reckon against
the king of Babylon and against that nation-oracle of Yahweh-their in-
iquity; also against the land of the Chaldeans, and I will make it desola-
tions forever.^13 And I will bring against that land all my words that I have
spoken against it, everything written in this book, which Jeremiah proph-
esied against all the nations.^14 Indeed many nations and great kings shall
make them serve-even them! And I will repay them according to their
deeds and according to the work of their hands.

  1. A Wrath-Filled Cup of Wine for the Nations (25:15-29)
25 15 For thus Yahweh, God of Israel, said to me: Take this wrath-filled cup of
wine from my hand, and make all the nations to whom I am sending you drink
it.^16 And they shall drink and retch and go mad before the sword that I am send-
ing among them.^17 So I took the cup from the hand of Yahweh and made all
the nations to whom Yahweh sent me drink:^18 Jerusalem and the cities of
Judah, and its kings, its princes, to make them a ruin, a desolation, an object of
hissing, and a swearword, as at this day;^19 Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and his ser-
vants, and his princes, and all his people,^20 and all the mixed races; and all the
kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, that is,
Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;^21 Edom, and
Moab, and the Ammonites;^22 and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Si-
don, and the kings of the coastlands that are across the sea;^23 and Dedan, and
Terna, and Buz, and all who crop the hair at the temples;^24 and all the kings of
Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed races who dwell in the desert;^25 and all
the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;^26 and
