When describing the tone of the passage, consider using some of these tone
words.


Analytical: picking things apart to find causes and effects; usually not very
emotional. Example: The actor’s melancholy can be partly attributed to his failed
audition, but it was the sudden onset of the measles that really brought him
down.


Cynical: believing in only the worst of human nature or events. Example: The
idea that a high schooler’s awareness campaign will have an iota of impact on
controlling carbon emissions is patently preposterous.


Detached: uninterested or disconnected; having no emotional reaction.
Example: There’s an enormous meteor heading right at us. In other news, I’m
thinking about adopting a parakeet.
