August 2017 Golf World 25
As we’ve already discussed, golf is a numbers game
–andnowhereisthismorerelevantthanwhen
pitching. You’ve got 62 yards into a green. What club
and length of swing do you need? Chances are you

Know your carry
yardages. There are two
elements to pitching – air
time and ground time. It’s
vital you know how far you
can carry the ball through
the air to avoid hazards.
Ground time (roll) is
determined by the surface
conditions.
1
Hit at least 10 shots
with all of your
wedges. Ignore any
bad thins or fats and
take an average of
the rest.
3
The aerial route isn’t
always the answer. If the
turf is fairly firm and there’s
nothing blocking your
route to the hole, an
extended chip-and-run is a
good option. Know how far
you hit the ball like this
with a 6, 7, and 8-iron.
