OM Yoga UK – June 2017

(Steven Felgate) #1

June sees the sun reach its highest point, but with so much light and warmth shining down on
us, we can become overheated. Sandalwood oil (santalaceae santalum album) is the perfect
essential oil for summer as it is excellent at cooling and calming the entire body and mind.
Place a few drops of sandalwood oil in some olive oil and apply to the third eye. This helps
relieve heat and thirst and over exposure to the sun. Or place a few drops in some rosewater
for a cooling, calming mist spray. Sandalwood also calms the emotions. Place a couple of drops
on a tissue and inhale to restore your equilibrium. It helps to quieten the mental chitter chatter
which is why it makes such a wonderful oil for meditation. Try anointing yourself before practice
or meditation with diluted sandalwood to help balance all of the major chakras and bring you to
complete harmony and calm the energetic and subtle energy centres.
Sacred sandalwood has long been used in spiritual practices, rituals and ceremonies. Sadhus
would place sandalwood ash on their third eye each morning to help bring the devotee closer
to the divine. The best oil comes from Mysore and was so prized for its spiritual and divine
properties that in 1792 sandalwood was declared a royal tree by the Sultan of Mysore and
placed under protection of the Indian government.
Use Mysore sandalwood not red sandalwood which is a completely
different species. Do not use if breastfeeding or with young children.
