The girl
I have raised a girl, and she made it to womanhood. It was
tumultuous to say the least and we haven’t given up our annual
ticket to the roller coaster just yet. The foundation has been laid,
and other than offer support, and a little problem solving, I think
I’ve done my job. It was far from simple, but mostly I could relate.
Periods, fluctuating moods, thinking boys were smelly and then

could check that box. She moved into an experimental music phase,
I loved it. She fell in love with a boy; I did too. She started asking
questions of a deeper existence, I took her to a shamanic sisterhood
circle. It may not have been easy, but it fitted, and each step of the
way, I remembered my own adolescence, even things that had been
long forgotten. We cuddled, watched rom coms and had ‘period
days’. I made it. I successfully raised a girl.
