The Gauntlet of Fire

When my kids were little, I referred to the grocery store check-
out line as the “gauntlet of fire.”
I imagined the brainstorming sessions for the design of the
checkout aisle going something like this:

“I know! Let’s make the aisles as narrow as possible so as
people are unloading the groceries at one end, the children
can sneak past the cart and wreak havoc just beyond their
g rasp.”
“Brilliant! And let’s put the toilet- shaped candy
complete with a choking- hazard lollipop plunger right at
the eye level of a two- year- old.”
“These are only temporary trials. We’ll make this a true
gauntlet of fire by placing racks of magazines filled with
questionable journalism and even more questionable cloth-
ing choices right where elementary- aged children can read
the article titles and ask unbelievably awkward questions
while customers are paying so they won’t notice how much
we are charging.”
“Your genius is too much. We are not worthy. Mwah,
ha ha ha!”

I’ve been told I overdramatize. Whatever.
But have you noticed the magazines in the gauntlet- of- fire
