YOGA FOR BEGINNERS
Breathing Meditation
We’ve touched on the breath at the beginning of this
section. The Breathing meditation tunes in further to
intricacies of the breath.
Follow the instructions below to practice the Breathing
meditation.
- Start in Easy pose or any other seated position that is com-
fortable. Use props if necessary to support your body. - Close your eyes and take a few moments to just be. Notice
what you are experiencing in this moment—sounds from
outside, aches in the body, thoughts of the past or future,
your feelings. Do not try to do anything about them. Simply
take note that they are there as you settle into the practice. - Bring your attention to your breath. Do not try to change
it. Just observe. Notice each part of the breath. Pay attention
to the details of the breath, how your nostrils expand as you
breathe in, how your lungs and ribs move in rhythm, how
the breath floats through your throat, how the air exits the
body, and how it comes into the body. - Let the small movements that occur in your body as you
breathe be your point of focus.
