Prayers of Søren Kierkegaard 95
The Word of God
Father in Heaven, what is a person like me that you should keep me
in mind, or any human being that you care for them in every single
way! But you did not leave yourself without witness; finally you
gave your Word. You could not do more. And if you then find any
willingness in an individual, then you are the one who, with more
than human – in fact with divine – patience sits and spells out the
Word with the individual so they may understand it correctly; and
then you are the one who, with more than human – in fact with
divine – patience takes them by the hand and helps them when they
strive to obey it – you, our Father in Heaven.^314

You who once wandered on earth, leaving footprints that we should
follow; you, who still from your heaven looks down on each wanderer,
strengthens the weary, encourages the despondent, leads back the
erring, comforts the striving; you, who also at the end of days will
return to judge whether each of us individually has followed you;
God and Saviour, let your example stand clearly before my inner eyes
to disperse the mists.^315
Our Father......
Prayer
I pray for myself and my family......
Lord, my God, I really have nothing at all for which to pray to you;
even if you would promise to grant my every wish, I really cannot
think of anything – except that I may remain with you, as near as
possible in this time of separation in which you and I are living, then
entirely with you in eternity.^316
