Toughest class:
Introduction to Aeronautics and
Astronautics (at Stanford). It was very,
very complicated, especially for an intro
class. A lot of math, a lot of memorization
of formulas. I took it my junior year
after I had switched my major from
Management of Science and Engineering
(to Atmosphere and Energy Engineering).

A baseball stat that should go away:
Can we add a stat? I think a batter deserves a sacrifice if he
moves a runner over from second to third – by hitting behind
the runner or if you fly out – and the runner ends up scoring.

Favorite player growing up:
Roberto Alomar. It was really cool when I played in Toronto,
because he saw an interview where I was asked about my
favorite player. A day or so later, a signed jersey was at my
locker that said, “Keep up the good work,” and it was signed
“Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar.” I don’t have a lot of signed
stuff – that one is pretty special.

I never say no to:
Dessert. I like to think I’m a wiry, strong guy, but
others might say skinny, so skipping dessert is a
bad thing.

A hug. In spring training, Adam Wainwright asked me,
“Are you a hugger?” I said, “Absolutely.” So he came
over and gave me a big hug. I give out hugs, too.

EXPANDING THE ZONE

Best of

What puts you to sleep:
Hockey (Sorry, Blues fans.) – Adam Wainwright, Issue 2, 2009

Most influential teammate:
Edgar Renteria, by far. He took me under his wing at Atlanta and taught me how to handle myself on and off the field. He would take me to dinner and I would
say thank you. “Don’t thank me,” he’d say. “The way you’re going to thank me is to do this for somebody else.” So every time I take guys out, after dinner
I say, “Thank Edgar Renteria.” – Brayan Pena, Issue 1, 2016

One thing I’m terrible at:
I’m pretty good at everything. Seriously
though, I’d say cutting my hair. Last year
I was trying to learn how to give myself
a haircut because that’s how Kyle Lohse
learned. He was the team barber and
gave a mean haircut. I wanted to do the
same thing, but I was terrible. I ended up
cutting my finger.

I’m still starstruck by:
Mark DeRosa – Matt Holliday, Issue 5, 2009

Best hair in baseball:
Besides me? When Manny Ramirez played, his
hair was the best.

  • Carlos Martinez, Issue 3, 2017

Most treasured possession:
My wife. I’d better say her, instead of my puppy dog.

  • Kyle McClellan, Issue 2, 2010

My guilty pleasure:
I had a root beer float last night and I forgot how
good they really were. People should drink more
of them – it would bring more joy to the world.
