Carrie’s solution
This will almost certainly
be linked to one of the
add-ins you have

installed. Karen had OfficeTab,
Nitro Pro and Grammarly add-ins
running, for example. To verify this,
open Word while holding the [Ctrl]
key and click Yes to start in Safe
mode when prompted. You should
find it shuts down instantly.
Next, go to File > Options >
Add-ins. Click ‘Go’ next to ‘Manage
COM Add-ins’ to see a full list. You
can disable the lot, then – once
you’ve verified one of them was
causing you problems – re-enable

them one at a time until the
problem returns. Once identified,
either remove the add-in or look
online for a possible solution.
Karen had most recently installed
Grammarly, so started by disabling
that. Word immediately shut down
correctly – she then re-enabled it to
discover the problem had now
magically vanished. However, after
it came back a bit later she decided
to remove the add-in and use the
native Windows app instead.
