(Frankie) #1

Dear Sofia,
Sorry for the late reply. I just got back from a trip to
the Dominican Republic with my family. It was a warm,
sunny break from New Hampshire. I’m so excited to
talk with you more. We like similar things. Paris sounds
exciting. My school has a New York trip I’ll be going
on this spring. In high school next year, there will be
more options for trips, including one to Hawaii for the
upperclassmen. Aloha!

It’s great that Montreal is bilingual. I wish we began
our language classes earlier. I hope to become better at
French, although I just started this year. I also hope to
learn Spanish. In the Dominican Republic, Spanish is the
primary language, although I was talking to someone
who worked at the resort, and he knew seven languages!

Your school system sounds interesting. You are right,
ours is different. In the United States, grades 1 through
5 are considered elementary (some elementary schools
include sixth grade). Then grades 6 through 8 are called
middle school. Grades 9 through 12 are high school, but
often instead of saying a grade number, we would say
freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior in high school.

After high school would be college or university,
where we also use freshman and those names.

It’s so great that you speak Italian too. That’s
really impressive!

In New Hampshire we have lots of
mountains. They are covered in snow right
now. In the summer, it can get really hot. In the
cooler mountains, we can do fun things like
go hiking or zip lining. In fall, it is cooler and
gorgeous because all the yellow, brown, and
red leaves fall. In spring, the flowers bloom and
it is beautiful. What are some fun things to do in
Montreal? When do you do them?

Your friend,
Kylie
