Ice hockey is the official
winter sport of Canada.
(The official summer sport is
lacrosse.)
The Stanley Cup is the most
important prize in hockey. It’s
named after Lord Stanley of
Preston, the governor general
of Canada, who donated the
original trophy in 1892.
The word hockey comes
from the French word
hocquet, which means “stick.”
Wayne Gretzky holds the
all-time record for the most
points scored: 2,857 points
over 20 seasons.
The first official team
was the McGill University
Hockey Club, which formed
in Montreal in 1880.
