ADB LEGENDS
JAMES STEWART JR
SOME MIGHT TELL you James
“Bubba” Stewart Jr is one of the
most naturally talented riders
ever to grace a supercross or
motocross track. Depending on
how you look at it, they may be
right on the money. Bubba was
born in Florida in 1985 and his
father, who was a fan of the
sport, got him on a bike not long
after he learnt to walk.
He was a Junior prodigy,
winning 84 amateur races and
seven Loretta Lynn’s titles. His
professional career began in
2002 and it wasn’t long before he
notched up a few AMA 125cc
titles. He went on to win the
450cc AMA Supercross
Championship in 2007 and 2009
and in 2008 he won every moto
of the AMA Pro Motocross series.
He is one of the few riders whose
popularity has transcended the
sport, bringing in Nike as a
sponsor and appearing in
publications like Rolling Stone,
GQ and Maxim.
He was known for being
extremely fast, but also later
became know for spectacular
crashes. His career took a big hit
in 2015 when he was suspended
for failing a drug test. He
returned at Anaheim 1 in 2016,
but suffered concussion on the
fi rst lap and has not raced since.

HOW TO: ADJUST YOUR CHAIN

ADJUSTING YOUR CHAIN so that it has the
correct tension is an important part of
maintaining your bike. It will help with the
longevity of your chain and sprockets. Checking
the chain tension before each ride will also help
avoid any issues on the trail.

1 Everyone has different ideas on how tight a
chain should be. Generally, you want to be able
to get three fi ngers between the chain and chain
guide. If they fi t nicely, then you’re good to go. If
they don’t fi t, then it’s too tight. And if you can fi t
four fi ngers, then it’s too loose. We’re still talking
about chains here, okay?
2 To adjust the chain, fi rst grab a ring spanner,
wrench or socket and loosen off the axle nut. It’s
easier to do this with the wheel on the ground.
3 Once the axle nut is loosened, elevate the
wheel off the ground. You can adjust the chain
with the wheel on the ground if necessary, but it
makes things a little more diffi cult.
4 Loosen the chain adjuster locking nuts on both
sides. These are the ones butting up against the
swingarm.
5 Turn each chain adjuster bolt (butting up
against the axle block) to loosen or tighten the
chain.
6 It’s important to make sure these are even on
both sides. Many models will have lines on the
axle block. Make sure the lines on both sides are
in the same position.
7 Double check the tension with your fi ngers and
then retighten the locking nuts and axle nut.
