BASIC TECHNIQUES

HOW TO COUNT ROWS

Using a row counter will help you to keep track
of where you are in a pattern, but you can also
count rows at key points in your pattern. To
count rows of tall treble stitches, it’s easy to
see the stitch ‘stems’ (see right). For the small
stitches of double crochet (see far right), it’s
easy to see the rows of inverted v-shaped
stitches (odd-numbered in photo), but
remember that there will be another row in
between (even-numbered in photo).

How to make sure you have
the right number of rows

1

Work three chains for the t-ch (see below
right), which counts as the first stitch of
the new row. Work yrh and insert hook under
the v-shaped top of the second stitch from the
previous row.

3

To finish the row of treble crochet stitches,
work the final treble stitch into the top chain
of the t-ch on the row below.

2

Work a treble stitch as before (yrh, pull yarn
through the stitch, yrh, pull through first two
loops, yrh, pull through two loops). Work a treble
in each stitch across the row.

4

Your second row of treble crochet will be
finished. Repeat Steps 1-3 until you have
the number of rows you need.

If you’re left-handed, follow these steps for a perfect double crochet stitch...
