Being able to count your stitches is vital and
helps to make sure you’re following a pattern
correctly. It’s a good idea to count the stitches
at the end of every row, especially after
working the first row of stitches into your
foundation chain.
To count half treble stitches, you can either
count each v-shaped top of the stitch, or the
tall side ‘stem’ of the stitch (see right). If you

made 21ch (plus 2 t-ch), you should now have
22 half treble stitches. Do make the time to
count your stitches – it’s much easier than
having to undo your work to find where a
mistake has been made earlier on!

After making a chain length, wrap yarn round
hook and insert hook into 3rd chain from
hook. Yarn round hook again.

Work yarn round hook again and gently pull
the yarn through the three loops on the
hook to finish the stitch.

Gently pull the yarn through the chain loop,
so you have three loops on the hook.

Your first half treble crochet stitch is
finished and you can see how it sits neatly
next to the 2-chain turning chain.
