› › HOW TO

Step Six: Click on the Foreground color
swatch near the bottom of the Toolbar, and
select an orange color in the Color Picker (the
exact color doesn’t matter here). Now click
the Add to Swatches button in the Color
Picker, give your swatch a name (I went with
“Orange 1”), and click OK to add the first color
to the Swatches panel. Don’t close the Color
Picker yet.

Step Seven: Select another shade of orange,
click the Add to Swatches button again, name
it (I’m going with “Orange 2,” “Orange 3,”
etc.), and click OK. Do this until you have five
shades of orange. Now do the same to add five
shades of yellow to the Swatches panel for a
total of ten colors. You can save this palette if
you want, but for now let’s get creative with
our new swatches.

Step Eight: Before we begin this process, we
need to Create a New Layer above the Gradient
Fill layer on which to paint.

Step Nine: We’re going to use different
brushes, settings, and colors on several differ-
ent layers to loosely sketch around our letters
in HALLOWEEN, so let’s select a brush for our
first layer. Switch to the Brush tool (B), open
the Brushes panel (Window>Brushes), and
select the Kyle Ultimate Charcoal Pencil from
the Dry Media Brush set. In the Brush Settings
panel (Window>Brush Settings), set the size to
175 px, Angle to 0°, Roundness to 100%, Spac-
ing to 17%, and turn off Smoothing on the left
side of the panel. Now select one of your 10
colors from the Swatches panel.

Step 10: Paint loosely around each letter. Don’t
worry about precision; this is purely up to your
own style, but I recommend a scruffy look.
