YOU’LLNEED
You’ll need an iPad
and ‘Notebook - Take
Notes, Sync’ from the
App Store

There are lots of really great
notes apps in the App Store, plus
the one built into iPadOS, of
course. Unfortunately many of
those in the store are aimed at business users
and priced accordingly. Wouldn’t it be good if
there was a really great notes app that didn’t
have such a hefty price tag, and went way
beyond what Apple offers? Enter Notebook,
which is free. That’s free as in free, not as in
‘free with screaming ads’ or ‘free but nothing
works without in-app purchases’.

Notebook comes from the same stable as
the very good and free Zoho office suite, and
it delivers the same thoughtful design. It’s a
genuinely nice app to use whether you’re
doing to-dos or recording audio notes,
scribbling with an Apple Pencil or plotting
world domination, and it’s easy to combine
pretty much everything in good looking and
very customisable notebooks.

Lost voice
It’s not entirely perfect, but the only time it
really falls down is in the bit you probably
won’t use anyway: it has a built-in voice
assistant that works very much like Siri, if you
wrapped Siri in a blanket and threw it down a
well. We found the assistant infuriating and
useless, but that’s in total contrast to the rest
of the app which we really love – and we think
you’ll love too.
In this tutorial we’ll concentrate on written
notes, audio recordings and images. You can
also import all kinds of files, and export to all
kinds of file formats and services. You can
even use it to scan business cards.

Notebooks also works
on iPhone and even
Apple Watch, where you
can scribble new notes,
read existing ones or
just check off items on
your to-do lists.
