Step 5
1 The distant houses are white but, as
we know, anything white must have some
blue in the shadow areas. To do this, paint
well-watered ultramarine blue on one
side of the building.
2 For the roofs, mix ultramarine blue
with a touch of light red, but again add
a weaker mix to the left-hand side, simply
with the addition of more water.
3 To paint the windows in the buildings
apply a couple of strokes of a stronger mix

t

of ultramarine blue and light red.
At this stage, also paint shadow under
the roofs with the same mix.
4 Use a mix of Hooker’s green and
burnt sienna for the trees around the
buildings then, while still wet, drop in
ultramarine blue for the darker areas.
5 Finally, add a stroke of yellow ochre
to the base of the buildings to add
a little light.

Step 6
1 Use the same process as before to
paint the next buildings, adding a stroke of
ultramarine blue on one side. In this case,
however, the roofs are burnt sienna. Again,
add more water to the mix for the lighter side.
2 There is a very important diagonal line
of shadow on the nearest building. This
again is painted with a mix of ultramarine
blue and light red.
3 Paint the tree as before, but make the
mixes stronger and darker.

Step 7
1 Coming forward, paint the next building
with a simple wash of raw umber and the
No. 8 Round brush. Don’t forget the chimney.
2 For the roof, use a mixture of ultramarine
blue and burnt sienna.
3 Use the same mix to paint the window
panes. Just add four marks within the window,

t
leaving a little of the white paper showing
between each one.
4 Go back into the building with stronger
raw umber to paint a few stones.
5 Don’t forget that all-important shadow
mix of ultramarine blue and light red
underneath the roof.

6 Paint the roof of the smaller
building in front with a weaker mix
of ultramarine blue and light red.
7 Add more water to your mix for the
building itself, and add just a couple
of dabs of yellow ochre and let this
spread.
