Salisbury, England, is a charm-
ing medieval city about 90 miles
south-west of London, in the his-
toric county of Wiltshire. There
are cobbled streets, half-timbered build-
ings, traditional pubs, tea rooms and nice
little shops. And there is, of course, the
magnificent Salisbury Cathedral, which
houses one of the four original copies of
the Magna Carta.
To really feel the spirit of history, book
one of the simple, but well-furnished
rooms at Sarum College right in the Ca-
thedral Close, which is the largest in Brit-
ain and reflects the architectural styles
of seven centuries. When they lock the
gates for the night, you have the area all
to yourself. Being almost alone right
next to the cathedral — with-
out masses of tourists — is
a special experience, peace-
ful and secluded. The city
offers great cultural ven-
ues, including the Odeon
cinema, which is in a listed
medieval building. The en-
trance hall takes your breath away.
From Salisbur y, you can venture to lots of
interesting places in the area. And Stone-
henge is not far away.

Scenic highways along the coast,
lively streets in the CBD (cen-
tral business district), a gentle
mist on top of Table Mountain
— Cape Town, South Africa, and its
surroundings are places where it is
worth spending your holidays
or even a lifetime. Watch
the sunset from Signal Hill,
explore the beautiful hik-
ing routes or take a walk
in Kirstenbosch Botanical
Garden to see the diverse
flora of the Cape. You’ll be
fascinated by the unique veg-
etation of the Fynbos ecoregion
and its beautiful protea flowers. Look-
ing for cultural events? Go to First Thurs-
days in the CBD, when galleries open for
free, or visit the yearly Open Book Festi-
val. Schedule some extra time to explore
the history of South Africa carefully by
visiting Slave Lodge, a museum about the
country’s social history, and Robben Is-
land. Cape Town is full of adventures and
incredible, open-minded people. If you’re
lucky, a local will invite you over for some
potjie (a stew cooked in a three-legged
pot) or for a braai, as South Africans call
their barbecues. Enjoy!
