FOOTBALL

Q

uarterback Bo Levi Mitch-
ell knows that his Calgary
Stampeders need to win
“no matter what” this weekend.
Heading into the final week of
the CFL’s regular season, the
Stamps are still locked in a battle
with the Saskatchewan Roughrid-
ers for first place in the West –
with a crucial bye week and home
playoff spot on the line.
“We’d love to be in first place,
have it locked up, be resting guys
because we’re not the healthiest
team in the world,” Mitchell said
on Friday. “We’ve got guys who

are banged up. I’m sure everybo-
dy does. But we’d love to have
that bye week to get guys ready to
go.”
In order to cement their posi-
tion atop the standings, however,
the Stamps (11-6) need to beat the
BC Lions (5-12) in Vancouver on
Saturday night.
Calgary will also need some
help from its Alberta rivals. If Sas-
katchewan (12-5) beats or ties the
Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday,
the Riders will automatically lock
up a first-place finish, regardless
of how the Lions-Stamps game
ends.
Mitchell and Calgary wide
receiver Reggie Begelton both
admitted that they’ll likely watch

a bit of the Esks-Riders matchup
before turning their attention to
game prep.
That doesn’t mean the Stam-
peders are pinning their playoff
hopes on another team’s results,
however.
“It just doesn’t change any-
thing for us. No matter what, we
have to win our game, whether
it’s for first or third or second,”
Mitchell said. “So we’ll see if we
get a little bit lucky in that sense.
But we’re just going to go out
there and fight for what we can
fight for.”
Calgary heads into Saturday’s
contest on a two-game losing skid
after dropping back-to-back
games against the Winnipeg Blue

Bombers.
The past couple of weeks have
made the team realize they need
to have some urgency to their
play, Begelton said.
“Throughout the year you lose
a game, you’re like ‘Oh, okay.
Well, we got to back on our feet,’ ”
he said. “But now it’s to that point
where you have to be extra crit-
ical of the things that you want to
fix because you really don’t have
any more time. It’s playoff foot-
ball. You have to get it now.”
Heading into the postseason,
Stamps coach Dave Dickenson
feels that his group still has a lot
of work to do if they want to get to
the Grey Cup final and defend
season’s year’s title.

“We’re not playing at cham-
pionship level yet,” he said.
“We’ve got to get there if we want
to have a chance. But I’m confi-
dent in the guys in the room that
we can get there.”
The squad has been “scratch-
ing and fighting” all year, Dicken-
son said, and he wants to see
more consistency from the group
come Saturday. That means see-
ing special teams deliver more
plays, while the offence and de-
fence string together a solid 60
minutes.
B.C. was ruled out of postsea-
son play weeks ago after starting
the year with a dismal 1-10 record.

T

he Saskatchewan Rough-
riders have a golden op-
portunity to lock down
first place in the CFL’s West Divi-
sion on Saturday, but they will
most likely be without starting
quarterback Cody Fajardo.
Fajardo, who was recently
named Saskatchewan’s nominee
as Most Outstanding Player, suf-
fered an oblique injury during
Wednesday’s practice and will be
a game-time decision when the
12-5-0 Roughriders play host to
the 8-9-0 Edmonton Eskimos in
the regular season finale.
“If the game was today, I
wouldn’t be able to play,” Farjar-
do said on Friday afternoon.
Fajardo, who leads the CFL
with 4,302 passing yards this sea-
son, described the injury as
“pretty significant” and de-
scribed the pain as “pretty tre-
mendous.” He’s thrown for 18
touchdown passes since taking
over from Zach Collaros, who
was sidelined with a concussion
in the season opener. Fajardo has
also rushed for 10 touchdowns.
The Riders can clinch first in
the West, along with a bye to the
conference final, with a victory
over the Eskimos or a Calgary
Stampeders loss to the BC Lions
on Saturday. If the Stampeders
win and the Riders lose, Sas-
katchewan will fall to second
place and would play host to the
Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the
West semi-final on Nov. 10.
The importance of the contest
isn’t lost on Fajardo, but he’s not

about to make an egotistical
decision to play at all costs.
“If I’m close to 50 or 60 per
cent, I’m out there on the field
with my guys, but I also don’t
want to be selfish and go out
there and do stuff that I can’t do,
and put the team in a bad sit-
uation when we have capable
backups in [Isaac] Harker and
[Bryan] Bennett that can get the
job done,” Fajardo said.
“If I’m unable to go tomorrow,
that doesn’t mean we’re going to
lose this game. We have a really
talented football team and every-
one is going to see that tomor-
row. I’m going to wake up, see
how I feel and go from there.”
If Fajardo is unable to play,
Harker will get the start with
Bennett moving into the backup
role. Harker, a 24-year-old roo-
kie, has appeared in three games
this season, completing 21 of 33
passes for 254 yards with no
touchdowns and three intercep-
tions.
Head coach Craig Dickenson is
confident that Harker and Ben-
nett are capable of filling in for
Fajardo.
“We certainly don’t feel like
we’re going to take a step back.
We know Cody’s had a great year,
but if he doesn’t play, we have
confidence in Isaac and Bryan,”
Dickenson said. “We feel like
with the guys around those
quarterbacks that we should be
effective, we should be produc-
tive and we should put points on
the board regardless.”
The Eskimos, who will travel
to Montreal to play the Alouettes
on Nov. 10 in the East Division
semi-final, have chosen to rest a
number of their starters on Sat-
urday, including quarterback
Trevor Harris and receivers Ricky
Collins Jr. and Greg Ellingson.
