WEARE sad to report the death of
Peter Lindbergh, the acclaimed German
fashion photographer who helped propel
Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell to
supermodel stardom. Lindbergh was
born Peter Brodbeck in Leszno, Poland, on
23 November 1944, and studied painting
at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in the
1960s. He became a photographer by
accident, after discovering he enjoyed taking
photos of his brother’s children, and opened
his first pro studio in Düsseldorf, Germany, in

  1. In terms of Lindbergh’s photography,
he is best known for his black & white,
classically composed cover shots of youthful
supermodels, but he also did some great
work with older subjects, notably Helen
Mirren. ‘This should be the responsibility of
photographers today to free women, and
finally everyone, from the terror of youth
    and perfection,’ he once said.

Nikon announces D

and 120-300mm lens

NIKON has announced the development
of the D6 professional DSLR, and the
Nikkor 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR
telephoto zoom lens for its full-frame DSLRs.
No technical specifications have been revealed
at this stage about the D6, which updates the
D5 as its flagship full-frame DSLR. That said,
there is a good chance the new camera
could offer improved AF technology, image
stabilisation and silent-mode shooting. Given
the impressive video capabilities of the Z 6 and
Z 7 mirrorless models, the D6’s movie features
are also likely to get a boost. The
new camera won’t be
available until 2020,
presumably in time
for the Tokyo
Olympics next
summer (this is
a fast, high-
performance DSLR,
remember). It may
also be available
to view at the CP+
camera show in
Japan next February.
The new AF-S
Nikkor 120-300mm
f/2.8E FL ED SR VR
lens, meanwhile,
celebrates the 60th

anniversary of the Nikon F mount adopted for
the D series. We can tell from the lens name
that it includes a silent-wave autofocus motor,
an electromagnetic diaphragm actuator,
fluorite and extra-low dispersion glass
elements to minimise chromatic aberration,
and optical image stabilisation. Intriguingly,
though, the SR designation is new to Nikon.

TURNINGto Nikon’s mirrorless cameras, the
company also announced its seventh lens for
the full-frame Z range. The Nikkor Z 24mm f/1.
S is ‘optimal for all types of photography including
landscapes’ according to Nikon, and features
12 elements in 10 groups with four aspherical
elements and an Extra-Low Dispersion (ED)
glass element to beat aberration. A Nano Crystal
coating also minimises ghosting and flare, and
the lens is moisture- and dust-resistant. Another
key feature is Nikon’s Multi-Focusing System,
which combines two AF drives for fast focus
performance, while a control ring enables silent
aperture control or exposure compensation.
It can also be used to focus the lens manually.
The Nikkor Z 24mm f/1.8 S goes on sale on
17 October for £1,049.
