From the depths of the Amazon
rainforest to the scorching deserts
of Africa, Ed Stafford has survived
alone in some of the world’s most
hostile environments. But now the
famous adventurer is also putting
his family to the ultimate test.
In this one-off film, Stafford
will be spending a month on a
remote, uninhabited Indonesian
island – and he’ll be taking his
wife, Laura, and their 20 month-
old son Ran with him.
‘I believe there’s a better and
simpler way of living,’ explains
Stafford. ‘I’ve always enjoyed
exploring a “back-to-basics”
life and so I wanted to take my
family off-grid to see what
it was like. But having my young
son with me meant a lot more
responsibility and it wasn’t a
responsibility I took lightly.’
SHELTER FIRST
Stafford, 43, has always been
passionate about the great
outdoors, but he wanted to know
how his family’s relationships
would be affected when stripped
of the modern trappings of life.
Will they discover a more natural,
wholesome way of living? Will
their relationships get closer, and
will Ran’s development accelerate?
Armed with only a couple of
days’ worth of water and some
bananas for Ran, Stafford’s
first task is to build a makeshift
shelter to protect his son from the
elements. Yet, after being on the
island for just a few hours, disaster
strikes when a storm blows in.
‘I had to keep Ran out of the
wind and rain,’ says Stafford. ‘He’s
small and there was a real danger
of hypothermia setting in if we
hadn’t got some shelter up. At that
point I was wondering if I had
made the worst mistake of my life.’
Thankfully, the family survived
their first night. And the next day,
the survival expert found a fresh
water source. After using his skills
to fashion a spear from scrap he
found on the beach, Stafford was
also able to provide his family
with their first proper meal.
‘Catching a wild pig and
cooking it for Laura and Ran was
a special feeling,’ he says. ‘I was
worried I’d been reckless and
irresponsible by bringing my
son here, but I think we proved
that it is possible for a family to go
and live off-grid and survive. I’m
super-proud of Laura and Ran
- they’ve done so well.’
