“The shoot took place on a hill in
Atlanta with a partial set consisting
of the spire and the hole going down
into the mineshaft,” explains Method
Studios associate VFX supervisor Todd
Perry. “It was a hybrid of different
parts of Africa. The cliff face was
based on a real place called Table
Mountain and the model was built
from photogrammetry in Maya.” An
Angora crater was also used as a point
of reference.

“The layout was taken into
Houdini where we ran an erosion
procedure to get finer detail on the
surfaces,” remarks Perry. “Foliage was
distributed by using displacement
maps. It was combined with slope
values so when things got too steep
there was less foliage. In Houdini we
culled the environment based on
the position of the camera. It only
calculated what was within the camera
view with some buffer on either side.”
