Picky pupils’ sarnie swap shop

HALF of primary schoolchildren admit they
trade their packed lunch in the playground.
Health benefits are key for seven in 10
parents when packing a lunchbox but kids
have different ideas, the survey found.
Chocolate spread, jam and peanut butter
were all in the top 10 of their sandwich

fillings. Two in three picky pupils aged six to
11 even make complaints or put in requests.
A sandwich, crisps, fruit and water is the
most common kids’ packed lunch.
Warburtons, which quizzed 1,000
parents, said: “Health, cost and catering for
fussy eaters are all huge factors.”

minutes of New Zealand’s University of
Otago revealing its findings, Nessie
hunters were insisting she was real –
and probably hiding in an uncharted
underground tunnel during the survey.
Steve Feltham, recognised by the
Guinness Book of Records for the
longest continuous vigil at Loch Ness,
said: “A 12-year-old boy could tell you
there are eels in Loch Ness.”
But Gary Campbell,
who keeps a register of
sightings, welcomed
the research and
said he hopes
more scientists
will examine life
in the loch.
He insisted
the tourism
based on the
legend would be
unaffected, adding:
“The Loch Ness
Monster has evolved
into a worldwide icon.”
The earliest record of
Nessie is of St Columba
encountering a beast in 565AD.
In 1934, Colonel Robert Wilson
released a photo of the monster – later
exposed as a hoax, using a toy subma-
rine fitted with a sea-serpent head.

NOT NESS

MONSTER

Mythical creature ‘just a giant eel’

THE Loch Ness Monster has
proved a slippery customer ever
since its first sighting in 565AD.
Theories on the fabled beast’s
identity have included it being giant
sturgeon or prehistoric plesiosaurs.
But now, scientists who studied DNA
from 250 water samples to cata-
logue life in the loch can
finally reveal Nessie is
probably a large eel.
However, study
leader Professor
Neil Gemmel did
concede that
Nessie may have
been “on holiday
at the time”. He
said: “People love
a mystery, we’ve
used science to add
another chapter to
Loch Ness’ mystique.
“We can’t find any
evidence of a [monster].
“So, sorry, I don’t think
the plesiosaur idea holds
up. There is a very significant amount
of eel DNA. Eels are very plentiful. So,
are they giant eels? Divers have claimed
they’ve seen eels as thick as their legs.”
He said further research was needed
but added: “Based on our data, giant
eels remain a plausible idea.” Within
