prod in Emery’s direction over
Arsenal’s tactics. “I had no clue
about their tactics, to be honest,”
he said.
“I saw their teamsheet and
thought it could be a diamond, but
I didn’t think they would play Pepe
in a different position in his
first game. No matter. We
can improve, but 80 per
cent of our game I am
completely happy
with.”
If there is
still
20 per
cent to
come from
Liverpool, then never
mind happy, Klopp
must be ecstatic.
it
may
have
been differ-
ent, but given
Liverpool’s inten-
sity a home win would
always have been proba-
ble.
Salah had David Luiz on toast.
With marmalade. His second goal,
turning the defender on the half-
way line and racing into the box to
score, was cruel. Luiz had tugged
Salah back to concede the penalty
from which the little Egyptian
made it 2-0 after Joel Matip had
opened the scoring with a header.

Liverpool players celebrate after
Salah fires home his second after
(above) making 2-0 from the spot
BY DAVID MADDOCK
DAVID LUIZ hit back at the
critics who slammed his
Anfield display.
The Arsenal defender
was taken to the cleaners by
Mo Salah for two of
Liverpool’s three goals.
But the Brazil star insisted
it was the first – a
penalty described as
“soft” by his
manager Unai Emery
- which led to the
second, when Salah
left him for dead on
the halfway line.
And Luiz claimed
even his opponent said
the penalty, awarded for a
shirt tug (left), wasn’t justified.
“Mo is my friend,” Luiz said.
“I spoke with him and he
said ‘I didn’t feel it, that is
why I continued to go for
the ball’.”
Luiz reckons the booking
awarded for the foul played on
his mind. “I think the yellow
card made it difficult for
me because you are
playing against a striker
who is fast and you cannot
make a foul,” he added.
And asked if that was in
his mind when he let Salah
turn and run, he replied:
“Yes. You make a foul and
put the team with 10 men –
it is even worse.”

THEY SAID IT...
We were doing some very good
transitions and we had some
chances but, in the second half,
the penalty was very soft. After
2-0 our reaction was good.
UNAI EMERY
Liverpool have won 12 consecutive
Premier League games, their best-
ever winning streak in the
competition.
Since Jurgen Klopp took over in
October 2015, Liverpool have scored
26 goals in eight Prem games
against Arsenal – the most one side
has netted against another in the
competition in that period.
Only Everton at Arsenal (64) have
conceded more away goals
against a single opponent than
Arsenal at Liverpool (62).
Arsenal have now failed to win any
of their last 23 away league games
against ‘Big 6’ sides – during this
run they have conceded 53 goals
while keeping one clean sheet.
Since the start of last season
Arsenal have given away eight
Prem penalties - only Brighton (10)
have faced more.
