GARDENING

PLANT
OF THE
WEEK

Garden art
Visit the Arts and Crafts
garden at Standen, in
West Sussex, to discover the
inspiration behind William
Morris’s ground-breaking
designs for fabrics,
wallpapers, tapestries and
embroidery in the 19th
century. The National Trust
property’s beautiful garden
features ancient apple trees
in the vegetable plot and
Sussex Weald views from
the formal gardens, and
there’s a trail showing why
trees such as oak, ash and
yew were important to
Morris. Until November it
also has the exhibition Morris
& Co. Inspired By Nature,
which explains how his
repeating patterns of flowers
and birds were chosen. The
house is open daily from
11am to 4.30pm and the
garden from 10am to 5pm
until November when they
close at 3.30pm and 4pm.
Entrance is £12.60, £6.30
for children and free for
members. Call 01342
